Week 2

We are into our second full week of school.  All seems to be going well.  I am still trying to assess all the children and get them into reading material at their level.  At this point I know that "Sam and the Bag" is not challenging for some children.  The first two books of this series are pretty phonetic, therefore not too challenging for some.  I will try to supplement the reading material for those who need it.  When we get to book three the intensity of each story increases substantially.

This week our vocabulary words are:
and
in
oh
yes

Spelling this week is:
am
ham
had
bad
bad
rag
cap
mad
up
go

We take a spelling test every Friday.

In math, we are doing tally marks.  These are very easy for some and totally puzzling for others.  Sometimes the saying "four standing tall; ones takes a fall"  will help them understand the concept.  You might want to have your child do a few numbers in tallies to make sure they are understanding the concept.

Have a great week!!

Hats

Since we were reading about hats, we made hats on Thursday. We wore them all day on Friday. It was a fun project and the children looked so cute.

Week 1

We will be starting our first week in the reading book. The story we will read is called "The Hat". We will be working on the short a sound and the -at word family. We will get three new sight words:
down
up
got

We will also take the first spelling test on Friday. They are all short a words that each child should be able to use phonics skills to sound out. The words are:
at
hat
cat
can
cap
tap
map
mad
a
the

We will be using the spelling tests that come with the reading program for the first 8-9 weeks. Then we will go into individual spelling. Those lists are the ones listed on the blog. I will list the first ones weekly in my update.

There will be homework every night this week. Each night there will be something to read and a question to answer in the agenda. Please initial the yellow box when homework has been completed.

If you have any questions, please call 333-6536 (room) or 333-4529 (home). My husband is a timber faller so we get up VERY early. Please don't call my house after 8 p.m.

Remember that Parents Night is August 19, at 6:30.

Welcome

It will soon be time to start another year in Room 136. I am looking forward to meeting all of you at the Open House on August 12 from 1:30-3:30.

I am starting this blog so that I can keep you informed of the happenings in our classroom. I will post vocabulary words, spelling lists, math concepts, etc. Hopefully this will help you as a parent know what we are doing.

Since the school is supplying most of the school supplies, your child will only need a backpack, a box of tissues, and a college ruled spiral notebook.

It will be exciting to work with you and your child. This will be a great year with an enjoyable new class.
